Maltby colliery, Rotherham originally opened in 1910 and was the main employer in the local area. Due to geological problems etc the colliery closed and Demex Ltd won the contract for the demolition of the surface buildings. Firstly we imported tens of thousands of tonnes of shaft-fill material to fill and cap the shafts. Then explosives were used to demolish several surface buildings including the main winding house that was a familiar landmark in the area standing some 78 meters high.
